Briana's Notes:
And now we finally see Penda's face! You can see where Diyero gets the blue eyes from. :D
Another way to tell that Duendai women are married (in addition to their hand tattoos) is if they wear a
mahaba necklace, like Penda has here. Mahaba necklaces are a sort of engagement ritual: When a Duendai man wants to propose to a woman, he carves her face tattoo symbols or some other visual representation of her name onto bone, horn, or wood and makes it into a necklace. He then offers the mahaba necklace to the woman. If she accepts, she wears the necklace. If she declines, the necklace is returned to the man. Once the proposal is accepted, the woman wears the mahaba necklace for the rest of her life - or, in extremely rare cases, when the couple divorces. You can tell mahaba apart from regular necklaces in that they're simple: Just a leather strap with the pendant carving.
If you've been paying attention to little details, current-day Jabin is wearing Penda's mahaba necklace around his left hand, where his wedding tattoos are. Yes, he's a bit of a closet softy. :P
